Moving Adolescent Students
Judith Warren
July 30, 2008
1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Middle School has changed and the demands on you, the administrator, and on your teachers and students have increased exponentially. How can we meet the increased student need for sophisticated and specialized literacy strategies and skills across the curriculum? How can we meet the increased demands on the teachers of these students to provide them with the strategies and skills they need?
This workshop will examine what students need to know and be able to do and what teachers need to know and be able to do when they encounter students with difficulties, lack of self-confidence, meager skills and even fewer strategies for using them. It will also examine the professional development challenges facing administrators when teachers need to build up their repertoire of teaching approaches.
Administrators will have an opportunity to explore professional development that addresses their students’ and teachers’ diverse needs and challenges. They will learn how to build capacity and depth in literacy pedagogy, building on and extending existing teacher strengths in order to prepare them to meet multiple challenges. This workshop will give participants insights into how make the school-level and classroom-level changes necessary for teacher and student growth to occur.
